As the busiest of four locations, The Women’s Specialists of New Mexico situated in Downtown Albuquerque identified a need to match their superior service with an inviting, convenient, and fresh new location. Formerly located in the Presbyterian Downtown Hospital, the practice chose to purchase and renovate a building adjacent to the hospital. The new location, positioned just steps from Presbyterian Hospital, offers patients and staff on site parking, a larger waiting room, and more exam rooms. Fresh, updated finishes were applied throughout the building to create a warm and welcoming environment.

The building, a former cancer clinic, sat vacant for years, and as such, was in need of attention. The space hosted only 10 exam rooms, one nurse station, a small waiting room, and out of date finishes. In order to accommodate the 35,000 patients seen per year, it was vital that the design team carefully reconfigure the space. Through meticulous demolition and trenching, the new layout features 24 exam rooms, all equipped with sinks and upgraded finishes. Additionally, the team was able to provide 3 centrally located nurse stations, two ultrasound rooms, provider offices, and an expanded conference room. One of the most notable changes occurred in the lobby; the small space was expanded to accommodate patients as well as their families. Hospitality-like finishes were applied throughout the space to include upgraded lighting, specialty wall finishes such as modular wall systems and Venetian plaster were applied, and new flooring was installed throughout. The lobby features new furniture as well as commissioned pieces of artwork. Additionally, the lobby was space planned in such a way that the furniture can be reconfigured to host large events such as yoga, educational classes, and birthing courses.

The new, streamlined clinic layout paired with the increase in exam rooms allow the providers of The Women’s Specialists of New Mexico to efficiently and effectively see patients. Furthermore, the new location offers comfort and convenience to their patients, an added value over the clinics previous location. Overall, the project proved to be a success, not only to the patients of The Women’s Specialists of New Mexico, but also to the providers.
