Through innovative design, strategic collaboration, and transformative architecture, the UNM HSC Center of Excellence for Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at City Center in Rio Rancho is the next step in medical exploration and expansion for the State of New Mexico. Not only is the Center of Excellence a medical destination for many, but it also serves as a laboratory for discovery and classroom for teaching, as a new addition to the UNM Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC) Rio Rancho campus. Through the design of the Center of Excellence, the UNM-HSC-Rio Rancho campus not only continues to grow, but also benefits from the new addition.
In collaboration with UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center (SRMC), the City of Rio Rancho, UNMHSC and Bradbury Stamm, H+Mdg identified project goals that would best support the Center of Excellence’s overall design, while also creating a cohesive space for the advancement of medical research, the quality treatment of patients, and a first-class educational facility for the Southwestern Region of the country.
A state-of-the-art facility, the 50,000 sq. ft., two level Center of Excellence provides a space for advanced research in orthopaedic and musculoskeletal surgery. The first level faces the Sandia mountains and houses students, researchers, rehabilitation, and teachers – a design that encourages learning, listening and growth. The second level faces SRMC and houses x-ray, 40 clinical rooms, and multiple avenues to treat and evaluate patients with several different providers. This design provides a space for those who are being treated to feel relaxed, comfortable and at-ease.
Through its design and operational functions, the new facility serves over 900 different visits per week, providing access to any who need care.
Unique to this project, an Innovation Room was designed to invite community participation and future partnerships from around the country – encouraging collaboration with those studying, researching, and learning on campus. The Center of Excellence will provide a space to encourage economic growth and development for the State of New Mexico.
